Why Multiple Algorithms?

MD5 — Fast but broken for security. Good for checksums and non-security uses.

SHA-1 — Deprecated for security but still used in Git and SSL certificates.

SHA-256 — The gold standard. Used in Bitcoin, TLS certificates, and modern security.

SHA-512 — Stronger than SHA-256. Preferred on 64-bit systems for performance.

Use Cases

File Integrity Verification

Generate a hash of a file's content to verify it hasn't been tampered with. Compare against known hashes from official sources.

Password Hashing Reference

Never use MD5 or SHA-1 for passwords. Use dedicated password hashing (bcrypt, scrypt, Argon2). This tool is for educational reference only.
